Oil on canvas, 20" x 20"
Bob is the tutor at Art Class, where I went every Tuesday morning, in term time, for three years. I did this portrait of him at the suggestion of his wife, Jackie. It was kept secret from Bob, so I couldn’t get his advice on it at Art class.
Bob is a well-known local professional artist. He has frequent exhibitions and sells his paintings far afield. He is also a published poet, and in addition to teaching Art he also taught Creative Writing. In his youth he was a local Police Officer. He is an excellent Art Teacher; I learned a huge amount from him. He gave me great encouragement to specialise as a portrait artist.
The face is deliberately painted in a style more reminiscent of his own, rather than mine. Bob uses a technique called ‘glazing’ extensively in his work. He has taught me how to do this, and this is the first portrait that I used it heavily on.
