008 Onions Poker
Oil on canvas, 20" x 30"
January 2010
This shows our daughter Vicky, her husband Dave Onions and his son Gary playing Texas Hold-em poker. We have a regular Monday-evening dinner party at our home, followed by a ‘friendly’ game of poker (but for real money, limited to five pounds each, and no cars!) This portrait celebrates this.
In Texas Hold-em, the winner is the player with the best five-card hand, made up of the two cards in his hand, plus any three of the five cards on the table. Vicky, the dealer, is about to lay the fifth card down. Dave has two Aces in his hand, plus a further two Aces on the table. He is confident that his four aces is the winning hand, so he has bet his Lotus on it. Gary currently has five diamonds, a flush. It’s a strong hand (he has bet his BMW on it) but not as good as four aces. However, you can see that the next and last card to be turned is a red Queen. If this is a diamond then Gary wins with a Royal Flush (ten, jack, queen, king, ace of the same suit), the best hand of all. If it is a heart then Dave wins. It’s 50 / 50.
Dave, an ex-soldier, and Vicky run The Old Cottage Pizza restaurant in Haverfordwest. This opens every evening, giving them most mornings and afternoons free. Dave is very keen on Golf. He is now a Golf Instructor. He plays in Charity matches with the On-Course Foundation, founded to get injured soldiers playing Golf (Dave lost an eye in Bosnia).
Vicky has started her own business, Haven Pet Care.
