012 Rebecca Hull
Oil on canvas, 20" x 20"
July 2010
Becky is my lovely daughter, mother of Jasmine, and wife of Nick. She is a Wine Master, working from home in Dorking, Surrey for Waitrose Supermarket.
I had wanted to paint her for some time, but she was reluctant. I had painted her several years’ before, using oil pastels. This was given to her as a prize for winning the Short Story competition that I ran each year. She wasn’t pleased with the prize. She said, “It’s very clever of you to be able to make it look like me, but I wish I didn’t look like that!” This is an attitude shared by many women; they want to be painted as they would like to look, rather than as they do look.
Eventually she agreed to be painted, since both Nick and Jazz had been done. Nick has offered to be my ‘agent’ to get me a commission, after I had painted Jazz. Having four portraits of mine in their home means that they can invite potential customers to a viewing at their gallery.
The photos for the portrait were taken in my garden; the background is a smoke-bush and rhododendron.
