014 Richard James
Oil on canvas, 24" x 30"
September 2010
Ann James lives at Clareston Hall, a 20-room Manor House, with a wonderful view over the Preseli Hills. The house has a grand entrance hall, which she has turned into her own Art Gallery. She wanted a copy of an old-fashioned portrait of a man in a red coat (which she found on the Internet), with a gilded frame, to really set it off.
I was reluctant to do a copy of someone else’s painting, but I agreed to do it if I could substitute the face for that of her husband Richard.
The original portrait is of General John Burgoyne, by Sir Joshua Reynolds, painted in 1766. Burgoyne was noted for his surrender at the battle of Saratoga, in the American War of Independence. The original painting is in the Frisk Museum, New York.
Sadly, Richard had an accident on his farm, and died in October 2012.
