Oil on canvas, 24" x 30"
Ann James lives at Clareston Hall, a 20-room Manor House, with a wonderful view over the Preseli Hills. The house has a grand entrance hall, which she has turned into her own Art Gallery.
Having received the portrait of her husband, Richard (see 014 Richard James), she wanted a similar portrait of a lady in a red dress to match it. Although she wasn't looking for a portrait, she was the obvious subject. She gave me a snapshot of herself taken 40 years ago!
Only the dress came from the original portrait, I invented the background, and the hat came from a book of Fashions Through the Ages, from 1760.
