Oil on canvas, 20" x 20"
Joan is the wife of my uncle Harry Bennett. In her younger days Joan worked on the counter at the local Post Office. Harry jokes that she agreed to marry him because she knew how much he had in his Post Office Savings account.
I painted Harry in portrait number 011. Harry asked me to paint Joan in secret, as a surprise for her 80th birthday, due the following October. I agreed but was sceptical. I suspected that an 80 year-old woman would not be too chuffed with a portrait of herself.
Harry gave me a couple of non-digital photographs to paint from. This added to my scepticism of the project. My scanner is in combination with my printer, and therefore not a high resolution. I invested in a better scanner, and it was worth it, since the resulting image does not pixellate when zoomed in.
