026 Anwen & Ronnie Barker
Oil on canvas, 20" x 24"
January 2012
My friend Ronnie married Anwen in June 2012.
Anwen’s favourite painting is La Belle Dame Sans Merci by Sir Frank Dicksee. For a surprise wedding present, Ronnie commissioned me to paint it with the faces changed to their own.
The original painting hangs in the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. It illustrates a poem by John Keats. It tells the story of a knight who comes across a damsel, with whom he falls in love. She takes him to her ‘elfin grotto’; he falls asleep, and wakes to find himself alone and trapped. Not an ideal story with which to start a marriage!
Ronnie presented the painting to Anwen at the wedding reception. She was surprised, delighted and amused by it.
