032 Archie Onions
Oil on Canvas, 20” x 16”
November 2012
Archie was born in Wolverhampton, and follows Wolves Football Club. He was apprenticed to Boulton Paul Aircraft, finishing in the design office working on transonic aircraft. In 1964 he changed direction, representing a heavy engineering company in UK and abroad. His three sons are Dave (my son-in-law, see portrait 008), Mike (see portrait 010), and Andrew. Archie has had a lifelong interest in vintage and classic cars, motorcycles, property development, and when possible, good living.
I had always wanted to paint Archie, because he has a distinctive front tooth, very useful for getting a likeness. Dave requested a portrait of his dad as a Christmas present. I had taken photographs of Archie on several previous occasions, but none of them were exactly what I was looking for.
A couple of years’ ago, Christine and I visited Archie and his wife Pauline at their house near Almeria, on the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Archie took us for a walk along the seashore. It was very rocky in places, which Chris and I found precarious; but Archie was very spry, extremely impressive for an 80-year-old.
