Oil on Canvas, 20” x 20”
Finlay is our niece Heidi’s partner. Christine and I visited them at Inverness in September. I was already planning to paint Finlay, so I took some suitable photographs of him. I painted this as a Christmas present.
Finlay works as a crane driver for Norbord in Inverness. They make Sterling Board. Finlay is a very practical person; he built his own large house in the woods close to Loch Ness. When not working on some DIY project he loves to play golf. He represented Scotland at golf, as a schoolboy.
Heidi’s father, Laurence, lives nearby and often visits them. His portrait, 002 Laurence May, hangs in their hall. I had the idea of Finlay’s portrait being a companion to that one, so I chose the pose that matched Laurence’s. I even used the same type of canvas, which I switched away from a couple of years’ ago.
Finlay was delighted with it; he was surprised that the photograph caught him smiling!
