Oil on Canvas, 30” x 24”
December 2015
As I was waiting to receive the photographs for 052 David Davies my mate Dai asked me to paint a portrait of his wife and children. Dai is my neighbour on my allotment. He has had his allotment for very many years more than I have had mine. I have had mine since I retired in 2007. We often stop for a chat. I ask him for his opinion if I get an unidentified problem with any of my vegetables.
Dai and his wife Lynne had a significant wedding anniversary coming up at the end of January 2016. The portrait was to be the surprise present. As source material Dai sent me scratched copy of a slide that was 25 years old. When painting women that is the recommended amount of age difference. Painting them as they are now is a big mistake!
Dai’s children grew up to make him proud. Both have University degrees. Tammy became a Maternity Nurse, and Thomas works as a bio-chemist.
A friend came to visit me and on seeing the portrait said “Oh! It is Lynne Roach.” I asked Dai if that was Lynne’s maiden name and he confirmed that it was.
Dai sent me a thank-you note; it was a success.
