A third commission in a row! This one came about via a Facebook message from a friend whom I had painted in 2012, Anwen Barker. Darren is a work colleague of hers and she put him in contact with me. Darren is a retired semi-pro Rugby player who played for Neath, amongst others. My source material was a page in an old programme that was illustrated with a picture of Darren.
Darren started his rugby career at Carmarthen Athletic youth where he represented Wales at under-18 and also under-19 level. After he left youth rugby he went on to play for Llandovery RFC where he also played for Wales under 21's.
He played a number of games with Neath RFC who were professional at the time, before transferring to Carmarthen Quins where he spent six seasons. He then wanted a new challenge so he transferred to Bridgend RFC for a season and then to Llanelli RFC the following season. He finished his career with Carmarthen Quins.
After his playing career he has qualified as a social worker and now works in Education. He is married to Emma and has two sons Archie and Freddie.
I invented the background to make it look like a real game environment at the Gnoll. The opposition are in the colours of Edinburgh.
